We receive death reports from many sources, including family members, funeral homes, financial institutions, postal authorities, States and other Federal agencies. It is important to note our records are not a comprehensive record of all deaths in the country.

Notify Social Security as soon as possible when someone getting benefits dies. In most cases, the funeral director will report the person’s death to Social Security. How to notify the Social Security Administration of a death
Note that you can't report a death online, but you can contact your local SSA Office or call 1-800-772-1213 to speak with a representative from the office who can help. If the death isn't reported, any payments collected from the SSA for the month your loved one passed or later must be paid back to the government.

Social Security Death Records (SSDR) contain the following data on a deceased person: Last name First name Date of Birth Date of Death Where the last SSB was sent State of residence Where the SSN was issued Last known address A Search Tip: When doing a search in the SSDI, do not include the middle initial. Middle names were not indexed.
